Translator's notes

The outmost has been done to faithfully render the original Greek texts into English, whilst ensuring that they are fully comprehensible to the English speaking reader who is not fully familiar with the Greek context. A few points are worth mentioning:

There are number of official conventions concerning the transcription of Greek names into Latin characters. The rules of transcription which have been used here, do not follow any single convention. Instead the most easily recognisable and pronounceable form has been used in each case. Alternative spellings of the same names however, may appear in other sources. Moreover, for those interested in the pronunciation of modern Greek, an explanatory note is provided (click here).

In certain cases Greek words or terms have been maintained in the English text, when it is believed that it enriches the text. In these instances the terms appear in italics and a footnote is provided to explain the term.

Explanatory footnotes in all the English texts are those of the translator rather than the original author.

There are frequent references in the text to geographic locations in present day Turkey. The choice of use of the common Greek names of these places, the current name in Turkish or commonly used English version, has been made purely on the basis of making the text comprehensible to the English speaking reader. For example, Asia Minor is frequently used in the text instead of Mikra Asia which is the commonly used Greek term or Anadolu which is the equivalent term in Turkish. Where necessary, a footnote has been provided to clarify the term.

There are frequent references to musical instruments which are in use in traditional Greek music. In translating these terms certain conventions have been followed to maintain consistency throughout. It should be noted however, that given that most of these instruments are or have been in use in the broader area of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, there are numerous alternative names for most of the instruments. For alternative names of the various instruments as well as interpretational please click here.

In closing, it should be noted that the content of this website includes material from over forty years of diligent work by Mrs Domna Samiou and her colleagues. As such, and to avoid lapses in consistency, certain terms have been maintained as they were originally used.

Alexander Seferiades
The intervening time between the album collections reveals the change in the perception of traditional music, sound engineering, and of the aesthetics in album designs.

The Songs section includes all the songs of her discography in alphabetical order. The songs have been categorized and sorted by bibliographic and record information. For each song a short music sample is available, as well as its lyrics and all the additional information. There is a search option by title, lyrics, and available material.

The Concerts section includes a selection among approximately one thousand concerts given by Domna Samiou from 1960 to 2005, in Greece and abroad. They are categorized according to the music venue and their theme, including all the available information, such as programs, posters, photographs, press clippings, etc.

The Programs section is dedicated to the series ‘Musiko Odiporiko’ (Musical Travelogue), which Domna presented at the national television. It is presented with comments and, where available, with accompanying material.

In the section Partners all the people that have collaborated with Domna are presented. All information included in biographical notes, which have been adapted to the website’s requirements, was been either provided by the collaborators themselves or by other sources. For each partner there is a detailed list of his collaborations, including related media clippings and photographs.

The Press clippings - Interviews section includes all the Greek and foreign Press articles and extracts of interviews given by Domna Samiou that are hosted on this website.
Pronunciation notes

Transcription from Greek characters into Latin characters may follow a number of different conventions. However, the result as far as pronunciation is concerned often remains confusing to readers who do not speak modern Greek. Even readers who are familiar with classical Greek will find that the Erasmian pronunciation of classical Greek that is taught outside Greece, is only of limited assistance in pronouncing modern Greek. Throughout the website a combination of conventions in transcription have been followed, in the hope that this will limit the confusion in terms of pronunciation. However, some simple rules of how certain letters and diphthongs are pronounced in Greek may assist readers as they try to decipher the Latinised versions.

Biographical note

Domna Samiou was born on October 12th 1928, in the Kaisariani1 neighborhood in Athens and died on March 10th 2012. Her parents were refugees from the village of Baindir in the Smyrna (Izmir) area. Her mother came to Greece in 1922, whilst her father, who was a prisoner of war, arrived slightly later during the exchange of populations2. During her childhood years she lived the harsh life of a refugee, but was also surrounded with the humane solidarity of the refugee communities. That is where she acquired her deep connection with popular culture and her aptitude to participate. It was in these surroundings that she also came into contact with music for the first time and where she acquired her love for folk music.

At the age of thirteen, whilst attending night school, Domna Samiou also began to receive her first formal musical training from Simon Karas at the Association for the Dissemination of National Music, where she was tutored in Byzantine and Folk music, as well as being introduced to the idea of field research in music.

Her first professional collaboration with the National Radio Foundation (E.I.R.)3 started when she was a member of the Simon Karas choir. In 1954 she became a full time employee of the station, working in the ‘National Music Section’4. Through her work there, she came in contact with the leading traditional musicians of the day, who were part of the greater migration wave at the time from the countryside to Athens. The National Music Section was busy recording such musicians and as a result, she became acquainted with all the various local musical styles. At the same time she was conducting the musical supervision for records, theatrical programs and films. In 1963 she started touring the countryside independently, to record music for the archive she was establishing, using her own means and equipment.

In 1971 Domna Samiou left her radio job and importantly, later in the year, accepted an invitation by the composer and performer Dionyssis Savvopoulos to start performing at a club called Rodeo, frequented by a youthful anti-junta5 audience. This marked the beginning of Domna Samiou's impact on the appreciation of folk music by the younger generations in Greece. Soon after she performed at the Bach Festival in London, which was being run by Lila Lalandi at the time. It was a triumphant start to a brilliant musical career. 'It made people overcome the embarrassment they felt for folk music' as she herself stated later.

In 1974 she started her collaboration with the Columbia record company, which resulted in a number of LPs being produced over the next years. In 1976-77, together with the film directors Fotos Lambrinos and Andreas Thomopoulos, she toured the Greek countryside and produced twenty episodes for the program 'Musiko Odiporiko' ('Musical Travelogue') of the Greek national television (ERT).

In 1981 the Domna Samiou Greek Folk Music Association was founded to preserve and promote Greek traditional music and allow for the production of records and the organisation of musical events to the highest standards, free from the demands of commercial record companies.

Domna Samiou's work reaches beyond the borders of Greece. Her records have been produced also under French and Swedish labels. For about forty years now she has performed all over the world, in places as distant as Australia and South America, appealing not only to the Greek diaspora, but also introducing non-Greek audiences to 'Greek music with no Bouzouki', as one critic in Sweden put it.

Within Greece her performances and appearances have been innumerable, as have been the tributes, such as the concert Domna Samiou at the Megaron Mousikis: the known and the unknown Domna held at the Athens Concert Hall to celebrated her seventieth birthday in October 1998.

In her work she has collaborated with the most renowned Greek and foreign musicians, musicologists, anthropologists and ethnomusicologists. Since 1994 she teaches traditional folk singing to adults at the Museum of Popular Musical Instruments of Athens. She has also initiated, taught, and promoted many young musicians, and has actively and selflessly undertaken numerous initiatives to improve musical education in primary schooling, which she considers of vital importance.

Celebrated for her work and endeared by her amicable character, she has witnessed her work being recognised broadly, and has received innumerable honors and prizes, including a medal from the President of Greece K. Stefanopoulos in 2005.

Surrounded by colleagues, friends and supporters, Domna Samiou continued her work till her death.

The Domna Samiou Greek Folk Music Association is currently involved in producing thematic series of CDs (which include extensive informative booklets on the contents), the organisation of her personal archives and the preparatory work to make them available on the web.

1The neighborhood of Kaisariani, to the east of central Athens, is one of the numerous neighborhoods which were established with the influx of Greek refugees from Turkey in 1922.
2The compulsory large scale exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey in 1923, following the cessation of hostilities between the two countries in 1922.

The section Domna on Domna is a compilation of personal accounts, arranged in chronological and thematic sections.
In the section Others on Domna selected extracts of texts published in newspapers, magazines, books, albums or elsewhere are presented, referring to Domna Samiou’s work and personality.
