Thodoris Georgopoulos
Biographical Note
Thodoris Georgopoulos was Born in Germany in 1968. His family is originally from Kato Labdani in Pogoni (Epirus). His first Clarinet teachers were the musicians of the Chaligianni family from Parakalomos in the Ioannina region, and subsequently the leading clarinettists Vasilis Soukas and Giorgos Brahopoulos. He studied Classical harmony and Byzantine music at the music school of Simon Karas and the kaval at the Filippoupoli Academy in Bulgaria.
He collaborated with virtuosos such as Angel Gadzev (gadulka) and Demos Polymeris (acordeon), in concerts and recordings of Balkan music. He has also collaborated with musicians and singers from the entire spectrum of Greek music, including the ‘Orchistra ton Chromaton’, Lykourgos Angelopoulos, Theodoros Vasilikos and Theodoros Vasileiou. He has performed on a regular basis with Domna Samiou for a number of years.
His records include Arvanitika Tragoudia, Pogoni Dropoli and Dytiki Anatoli. He has also worked as musical producer and on orchestral arrangements.
In 2004 and 2005 he taught traditional wind instruments at the Musical High School of Alimos and in recent years has founded his own extensive orchestra, which has participated in scores of festivals of ethnic and folk music around the world.
