Vangelis Karipis
Biographical Note
Vangelis Karipis was born in Athens in 1971. He became involved with traditional Greek music from an early age, studying oud as well as Byzantine music. From the age of sixteen he started teaching himself percussion. He followed seminars in ethnic percussion with important musicians such as Tricy Sankaran, Joe Santos, Jamey Haddad and Alfredo Reyes.
He has worked with many Greek composers and singers, and has participated in many concerts and international festivals (Womad, Sfinx, Meinz). He has collaborated with internationally renown soloists, both in concerts and in recordings.
In 2004 he represented Greece at the Medimuses international percussion convention in Tunis. He also participated in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Athens Olympics.
In 1997 he established, together with Andreas Pappas and Petros Kourtis, the percussion group "Krotala", with which since they perform concerts and participate in festivals in Greece and abroad.
His records to date are Krousta in collaboration with Andreas Pappas and Yiorgos Gevgelis, and Krotala with Andreas Papas and Petros Kourtis.
He teaches percussion in musical high schools and conservatoires in Athens.
