Evgenios Spatharis
Biographical Note
Born in 1924 in Kifissia, Athens. He was a painter and the most prominent shadow theatre artist in Greece.
He started giving shows during the German occupation, at theatres and embassies, at the Gennadius Library, and elsewhere. Since then, his has performed numerous times, in Greece and abroad, participating in international festivals and symposiums on shadow theatre. He presented many works with his hero ‘Karagiozis’, a shadow puppet and fictional character of Greek folklore, both in shadow theatre performances, as well as in live performances by actors. Moreover, his work has been broadcasted by the National Television from 1966 to 1992.
He was a member of the Chamber of Artists of Greece and the UNESCO International Theatre Institute. He was awarded the Rome Prize in 1962, the Toscanini medal in 1978 and several other awards, while in 2007 the Greek culture ministry awarded him the title of 'Grand Master' in recognition of his great contribution to his art.
He died in 2009 at the age of eighty-five.
