Necrolatric Dance of Easter

Listen

Lyrics

– My son, why don’t you go and wash, why don’t you change your clothing?
Today, my child, is Easter Day, you’ll go and take communion.

– No, mother, you must know I sinned while I was in the fighting.
The other men all hitched their mounts to handy lemon branches.
But I would hitch my grey around a dark-eyed lassie’s gravestone.
It’s true, my mount was only small, but it was spry and mettlesome.
Well, what with its shenanigans, the grave was opened up,
inside there lay a girl, three days she had been dead and buried.
I fell beside her on my knees and kissed her eyes and lips,
that’s how I came to sin, and still I’m in a state of sin.

Translated by John Leatham

Original Lyrics
