Palm Saturday it was, Saint Lazarus’ day
and the air was thick with manly sobs
and women’s lamentations.
’Tis not the killing pricked their tears,

Σαββάτο μέρα πέρασα
Σαββάτο μέρα πέρασα από το Μεσολόγγι
κι ήταν Σαββά- γεια σας παιδιά, κι ήταν Σαββάτο των Βαγιών.
Κι ήταν Σαββάτο των Βαγιών, Σαββάτο τ’ Αϊ-Λαζάρου
κι ακούω αντρίκια κλάματα, γυναίκεια μοιολόγια.
Δεν κλαίνε για το σκοτωμό, δεν κλαίνε για το φόνο,
