Lyrics

Twelve young evzones decided,
Holy Virgin, they decided to go to war.
On their way, Holy Virgin,
upon the black sea a blacker storm blew up
and ripped their sails to shreds.

Help us, Holy Virgin, help us save them
and we’ll light a thousand candles in Your name.
It’s not the ship I weep for nor the sails that I lament,
it’s those twelve young sailors,
for them alone I shed my tears.
And if we are lost, then so it is written,
’tis for our forefathers land we fight.

Translated by Michael Eleftheriou

Original Lyrics
