Lyrics
A little bird I had in a cage, by Saint Paraskevi
a sweet-smelling creature with the sweetest nature.
I fed her sugar – for you, sweet thankless maid,
and I fed her honey – for you, my snow princess.
And what with all the sugar,
the cage door came undone
and my little bird, my little nightingale was gone.
It flew to the mountains, to the cold, fresh springs,
to graze in the meadows and never to return.
Translated by Michael Eleftheriou
Original Lyrics
