Lyrics

Our fishing-boat a battered hulk, we cobbled it together,
we patched it up a thousand times, it stayed a ragged sight.

Our fishing-boat, an ugly tub , had neither sails nor sweeps.
Cast off, cast off and pull away! Take me along with you.

Our fishing-boat paid out her nets close by the lazaretto
and hauled aboard a maiden fair, as pure as ice-gold water.
We viewed our catch as one who’ d seen a goose become a swan.
Then kicks and punches were exchanged; who would eat it first?
I sold our fishing-boat right there in Saloniki port
and went back to my mother’s home with nothing in my purse.

Translated by John Leatham

Original Lyrics
