Lyrics
Forty klephts are we, forty brave young lads
and we swore an oath upon the Cross.
And we swore an oath upon the Cross
and another before the Virgin,
if one of us should e’er fall sick,
we would all stay at his side.
No sooner had we struck the deal
than fever struck our captain,
and forty days he suffered,
high up upon that mountain.
The captain’s clothes were soon but rags,
his sword fell from his grip.
‘I beg you, lads, I beg you from the bottom of my heart.
Take me up to yonder ridge, and there ye shall me bury,
cut branches from the mountain pine,
and lay my body on them’.

Original Lyrics
