Lyrics

There were three monks and hailed from Crete
and three from Ághion Óros1,
and they prepared a bark for sea; while chanting ‘Christ is risen!’
and ‘Kyrie, eléison’, they readied her for Kríti2.
Their sailor lad lay gravely ill up forrard in the foc’s’le.
No mother there to weep for him, no father to console him;
nor brother nor a sister there to keen and mourn his passing.
The captain sheds a tear for him, the young and manly sailor.
- Get up on deck, good sailor lad, get up and set the course now.
- Give me a hand and I’ll get up, but have me sit down somewhere,
and go and fetch my chart for me and bring my silver compass.
I’ll set a course for you to steer so we’ll make straight for harbour.
D’you see those yonder mountain tops? Then steer a course between them.
Drop anchor on the starboard side, put me over the port side.
And you, young sailor boys, why, you will go and dig the grave pit.
Don’t go and dig it far away, but close beside the sea’s edge.
The waves will then break over me and keep me cool and dewy.

Translated by John Leatham

1Ághion Óros: The Holy Mountain, that is, Mount Athos, a peninsula in northern Greece inhabited solely by communities of monks
2Kríti: The island of Crete

Original Lyrics
