Why Did I Fall in Love With You?

Enteka (Eleven)
Listen
Lyrics
Why did I go and fall for you?
Why didn't I just get on with my life?
Now my head’s swimming
and knives have pierced my heart.
The fault was mine, pity me and do what you will with me,
open your arms and take me in between them.
[I wanted to come last night; I was caught in light rain,
I prayed to God to find you alone.
Come, let us share my troubles.
If you were not the cause, I would not have suffered them.
I had clothes for you to change, a bed spread to cover you
And a body for you to embrace till you were roused by dawn.]
Original Lyrics

Notes
Dance with erotic couplets, danced face to face and unattached, to a 9/8 rhythm (2+24-2+3). Widespread and much-loved in Western Macedonia, especially in Kozani and Siatista. It is usually played as an instrumental tune by the brass-based traditional Macedonian ensemble (clarinet, cornet, trombone, percussion). It is very popular during feasts that involve disguise (Christmas 12days, Carnival) and at the climax of every joyous celebration, as it gives the dancers a lot of scope for improvisation. The dance is known most commonly as the enteka (eleven), an enigmatic name for which two explanations have been proposed: that it was the eleventh song on a particular band’s programme or that, back when there was an 11 o’clock curfew, it was the dance which brought the night’s festivities to a close.
