Ο Μάραντον

Listen

Lyrics

Amarandos has received the order to go to war.
He forges horseshoes of silver and nails of gold,
He shoes his black steed by the light of the moon.
His beloved beside him holds the nails in her kerchief:
– Where are you going, where are you going,
Amarandos and what are you leaving me?
– I leave you my patroti saint Constantine.
– May Charon take your patron saint Constantine!
– I leave you my mother the Holy Virgin.
– May Charon take your mother the Holy Virgin!
– I leave you my brothers the twelve Apostles.
– May Charon take your brothers the twelve Apostles!
– I leave you my ram with the golden bells,
I leave you a gold cross and a silver ring;
Sell the ring for food and prostrate yourself before the cross.

Translated by Derek Yeld

Notes

Sung at one time as either a lullaby or a reaping song, this very old Acritic melody comes from the region of Trebizond. No variant of it has come to light anywhere else which leads to the belief that the words of Amarandos goes to war have managed to come down the centuries unaltered. Basing their theories on a rhythmic analysis of the song, certain musicologists believe that it could contain elements of the music of ancient Greece. Aris Fakinos (1982)
