Listen

Original Lyrics

Εγώ, το άλογό μου (Ben atimi)

Ben atimi nallandiririm o kadar nalli
nan aman aman hele hele nalli –nan aman aman

Ben yarimi oynatirim dőkme de zilli –nan aman aman
hele hele zilli –nan aman aman

Kaşlari kara gőzleri ala biraz da boynu ufaktir aman

Benleri topaktir aman aman
Geldim yarin bahçesine gűller açiliverdi aman aman
eller açiliverdin aman aman

Aramizdan sevda boylu yarim seçiliverdin aman aman
hele seçiliverdin aman aman

Saçlari sari gőzleri mavi biraz da boynu ufaktir aman
Benleri topaktir aman aman

Geldim yarin bahçesine űç nar aldim yemeye aman
űç nar aldim yemeye aman

Ikisini koynuma koydum birini de yare vermeye aman
Birini de yare vermeye aman

Notes

According to the singer from Floytá recorded in 1930: “This song was sung at festive occasions. At evening gatherings people sang it along with the bouzouki and the tambourine. And one of them stood up and danced playing the spoons. This was a typical way of entertainment that followed christening or wedding ceremonies, Easter, and all other greater festivities, with friends and relatives gathered indoors. In such cases both men and women danced. Turks, though, never used to sing this song. But it was widespread all around the neighboring villages.”
Time signature: 2/4
Mode: Diatonic G within the range of a minor sixth. Finalis on B.

Recording information

Studio recording, 2001. Based on the original recording of 1930 by Melpo Merlier, founder of the “Music Folklore Archive” of the “Centre for Asia Minor Studies”.
