Lyrics

We kissed each other in the night, and who could see us then?
I’ll tell you, dear, the star saw us, and dawn saw us as well.

The star saw us and dawn did too, the star and the moon,
the star it was that then leant down and told the sea below,
the sea next told the bending oar, the oar the sailor worked,
the sailor made a song of it and sang it in the bow.
I kissed the lips that were bright red, and so I stained my own,
I wiped them with a kerchief and the kerchief went bright red;
five rivers tried to wash it out, all five in turn were stained,
the shores around the sea were stained, and so the middle of the ocean;
the sailing ships that passed that way all found their oars were stained,
and dark-skinned girls who wandered by all dyed their hair.

Translated by John Leatham

Original Lyrics
