Lyrics

Joy and celebrations across the land
but Náfplion, my Náfplion, why are you not joyous?
Why no scenes of joy, no celebrations?
What cause for joy have I,
what grounds for celebration?
The Prince pounds me from the land,
Boumboulina from the sea.
Náfplion, hand over the keys.

Translated by Michael Eleftheriou

Original Lyrics

Το τι καλό ’χω να χαρώ, παιχνίδια να βαρέσω;

Notes

The song tells of the last and fateful siege of Venetian-held Nafplio by the Turks; the city’s fall in 1715 led to the enslavement of the whole Peloponnese. ‘The Prince pounds me from the land, Boumboulina from the sea’ must have been added at a later date, when the historical facts had been forgotten. Miranda Terzopoulou (2007)
