Lyrics

Somewhere in the Aegean Sea, oh, my heart, my heart,
so distant, so far away, my heart is fit to burst.

A vessel richly fitted out, set out for ports in Frankish lands.
It was manned by Pontic Greeks, by Greeks from ancient lands,
They bent their bodies, strained their arms and pulled upon the oars.
And as they rowed in unison, an arbour came in view,
and standing just above it was a girl with golden hair.
And she was waving with her kerchief, and the vessel came to a halt.
– Ah, captain, master of the ship, dear captain, light of mine eyes,
I beg you, take me along with you, take me aboard your ship.
– Dear girl, I cannot do that, you see, it wouldn’t do at all.
I have embarked a crew of Greeks, they’re Greeks from ancient lands,
and they’ll make fun of you and kiss you, and they’ll capsize my ship.

Translated by John Leatham

Original Lyrics
