Listen

Lyrics

Famed Andronikos, who was born and raised in riches,
started school on the 6th of the month and could read by the 7th.
By the 8th and 9th he could write and add and take away,
by the 10th and the 12th he could divide and multiply
and was quick-witted enough to answer any question.
On the 18th he took a sword, mounted a horse
equipped with perfect reins, saddle and stirrups.
When the young ladies of the court saw him
wandering in the palace and the royal gardens
they were full of admiration and fell in love with him,
but the king's daughter loved him most of all.
She loved him and admired him in secret,
and though she hid it from her parents,
she did not hide her love from herself.
[Andronikos also fell very much in love with the maiden
and proceeded most prudently and patiently.
One Sunday, he went out for a walk
and they met at the edge of the orchard.
- Greetings, princess, daughter of the king.
What brings the light of the East, the kind-hearted dove,
out here into the fresh breeze?
- Welcome, young and handsome lord,
pride of our city, jewel of our castle,
beloved of all maidens, my life and hope.
They strolled out in secret, they met far from prying eyes,
they fell into each other's arms in secret,
and in secret her mother learned of the baby in her belly.
In secret, she told the king their daughter must be wed.
And before the month was out
a great celebration was held and all the great and good invited,
and both Andronikos and the queen swelled with pride and joy.]

Original Lyrics

το νούρι3 της Ανατολής, τ' άχολο περιστέρι;
