The Song of Porfyris

Listen

Original Lyrics

Notes

Porphiris the hero of this Byzantine ballad has superhuman powers. One day he boasts that he is not afraid of anybody, not even the king himself. The king orders his arrest. He is found asleep and bound in chains. In this particular variant Porphiris in order to escape disguises himself as a shepherd but eventually is captured. While led to jail, he smashes his chains and exterminates his enemies.
Time signature: 4/4
Mode: Diatonic D low pentachord with subtonic present. F functions within the gravitation of G.
